GPS Vehicle Tracking - Explained

GPS Vehicle Tracking - FAQs

Will this technology be compatible with my vehicle?
Yes, almost certainly. The vehicle tracking device is very small. In most cases, all that is required is a power feed from the vehicle and a connection to sense when the ignition is on.

Can the vehicle tracking device be hidden from view?
Yes. Enhanced security is a benefit of the system, so in most cases the device and antenna are concealed beneath the vehicle dashboard so that there is no sign of it being fitted.

How long does it take to install?
In most cases, the installation can be done in less than an hour per vehicle. The AT100 vehicle tracking device from Astra Telematics is particularly simple and quick to install, due to its tiny size.

Will the vehicle tracking device drain my vehicle's battery?
The latest vehicle tracking devices are very power efficient, usually drawing less power than an interior lightbulb. So, it is perfectly safe to leave the vehicle parked for several weeks without any concern about battery drain.

Can the vehicle tracking device be moved from one vehicle to another?
Yes, this is usually no problem, although most service providers will make a small charge each time the device needs to be moved.

What kind of data will be provided by the system?
This depends on your application service provider, but in most cases you will get an overview of every vehicle in your fleet, along with its current location and status (i.e. stationary or in a journey). For each vehicle, a list of journeys will be available, showing start and end addresses, journey time, journey distance, maximum speed, maximum acceleration/deceleration and idle time. Reports can be done over a selected period to show vehicle utilisation, mileage, working hours etc.

Who will be able to access this data?
Access to these systems is strictly controlled so that only authorised users can log in to access the data. Just like any online system, its important that you keep your username and password private and change your password periodially.

What do I need to access the system?
Most service providers offer a simple browser interface, so that all you need is a computer with an internet connection and an internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox). So, you can use the system the the office, home or even in an internet cafe etc.

Can I track my vehicles outside the UK?
Yes, the GPRS network allows roaming all over the world. Network costs whilst roaming are higher, so there will be a premium charged for roaming options in most cases.

Is it possible to immobilise the vehicle?
Yes, there are features that will allow control of external devices via relays etc. This can be used to immobilise a vehicle, usually preventing the cranking circuit from re-starting the vehicle. This feature is not typically offered as standard, so you should discuss the option with your chosen application service provider.

How much will all this cost?
The entire cost of the system covers the vehicle tracking device, installation, GPRS airtime and a subscription to use the internet based application software. In most cases, these costs are rolled into a single figure and paid on lease terms over 3 years. Typical monthly lease costs start at around £20 per month for a basic system, but can be significantly higher depending on options and system features.
